Terrorist soldier kills 27 in bloodiest shooting spree in Thailand

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand (AP) — Thailand’s prime minister says 27 people are dead, including the gunman who went on the bloodiest shooting spree in the country’s history.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters that another 57 people have been wounded in the 16-hour rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima, a hub for Thailand’s relatively poorer and rural northeastern region.

Authorities say a soldier angry over a financial dispute was behind the killings.

Worker Killed, Another Injured As Plane Crashes Tow Truck At Bangkok Airport

BANGKOK, Feb 8 (NNN-TNA) – One airport worker was killed and another injured, following a crash between a domestic airliner and its tow truck, at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok.

According to Don Mueang airport director, Samphan Khutharanon, the Nok Air plane, accidentally crashed with the tow truck, at work near an aircraft parking area, where it was about to pick up passengers, killing the driver of the tow truck and injuring a worker.

Genocide charge dents halo of Myanmar’s Suu Kyi

BANGKOK (AP) — When Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi walked into the International Court of Justice last month, she gambled the remaining shreds of her hard-won international reputation on a rebuttal of accusations that her country’s military committed genocide against minority Rohingya Muslims.

The court was not persuaded. This past week, it ordered Myanmar to take all possible measures to prevent genocide against the Rohingya.

Thai government to roll out anti-smog measures to curb aggravating air quality

BANGKOK, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Wednesday announced that anti-smog measures will be announced on Thursday in an attempt to reduce the density of fine-dusts plaguing Bangkok and other major cities across the country.

The ministry's National Environment Board will issue anti-smog measures on Thursday and will address and limit the use of vehicles in the city, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-archa.

World Bank cuts Thailand 2020 GDP growth outlook to 2.7%

BANGKOK (Reuters) - The World Bank on Friday cut its estimate for Thailand’s economic growth to 2.7% this year, but that is faster than last year’s pace as private consumption recovers and investment increases due to the launch of large infrastructure projects.

The bank had expected the economy to expand 2.9% this year in its economic report on Thailand in October.

It estimated 2019 growth at 2.5%, a five-year low, due to declining exports and weakness in domestic demand, it said in a statement. The economy expanded 4.1% in 2018.

Thailand: Masked man shoots dead three including toddler in shopping mall

BANGKOK, Jan 10 (NNN-BERNAMA) – A masked gunman went on a shooting spree that killed three people, including a two-year-old boy in a jewellery store during robbery at a shopping mall in Lop Buri Province Thursday night.

A closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the gunman, clad in black shirt and camouflage pants, carrying a handgun with a long sound suppressor entering the shopping mall.

Thai authorities target stores selling alcohol to underage during New Year holiday

BANGKOK, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Thai police on Monday warned all alcohol stores against selling alcoholic beverages to the underage, or face heavy penalties.

The police are on a watch on retail stores that sell alcohol to those under the age of 20, especially during the New Year holiday as death toll for the first three days of the holiday season have already climbed to 159 on Sunday, said Pol Lt-Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapat, assistant national police chief and spokesman of the Center to Prevent and Reduce Road Accidents.

Thailand's new inflation target no changes in monetary policy - deputy governor

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s new inflation target range of 1%-3% for next year, narrowed from this year’s 1%-4%, does not signal a change in monetary policy implementation, a deputy central bank governor said on Tuesday.

Monetary policy will still be data-dependent and will likely remain accommodative to support economic growth and help inflation return to target, Mathee Supapongse told reporters.

6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Thailand

BANGKOK, Thailand, Nov 21 (NNN-TNA) – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit northern Thailand at 6:50 a.m. local time, on Thursday (today), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), said.

The quake, which occurred at 2350 GMT Wednesday, was centred at 31 km southeast of Chaloem Phra Kiat, with a depth of 10.0 km, according to the USGS.
