Post-Soviet security bloc to discuss over 20 issues at Bishkek summit

BISHKEK, November 25. /TASS/: Participants of the upcoming session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Security Council in Kyrgyzstan’s capital of Bishkek will discuss more than 20 issues related to security, a Kyrgyz official told a news conference on Monday.

"During the session, the sides plan to discuss 21 issues related to ensuring collective and regional security," said Daniyar Sydykov, who is in charge of foreign policy issues at the Kyrgyz presidential administration.

U.S. Peace Corps volunteer detained in Kyrgyzstan for carrying drugs

BISHKEK, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Police have detained a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer who was carrying more than 1 kg of drugs in south Kyrgyzstan, the Internal Affairs Department of the Jalal-Abad region said Friday.

The police said they stopped a taxi on the Bishkek-Osh highway and the behavior of the passengers seemed suspicious.

While inspecting the car, police officers found a package containing 1.026 kg of marijuana in the back seat, it said.

Large-scale drills of Russian Armed Forces kick off in Central Military District

BISHKEK, September 16. /TASS/: The Center-2019 (Tsentr-2019) military drills involving Kyrgyz and Russian servicemen kicked off in Kyrgyzstan on Monday, the Central Asian state’s General Staff said in a statement. "An opening ceremony for strategic command and staff exercises Center-2019 took place at the Edelweiss training ground on September 16," the statement reads.

According to the General Staff, some 500 servicemen from the two countries, nearly 100 pieces of military and special equipment, artillery, transport and army aviation as well as drones are involved in the drills.

Kyrgyz court rules to keep ex-president in custody

BISKHEK, August 16. /TASS/: The Bishkek City Court has ruled to keep Kyrgyzstan’s former President Almazbek Atambayev in custody, a TASS correspondent reported from the office of the country’s State National Security Committee where a court hearing had been held.

Bishkek’s Pervomaisky District Court earlier put Atambayev in custody until August 26.

"The Bishkek City Court has violated a number of legislative acts by making this decision, including those concerning guarantees for the ex-president," Atambayev’s lawyer Sergei Slesarev said.

Kyrgyzstan's former president charged with murder

BISHKEK, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A number of criminal cases were initiated against the associates of former President Almazbek Atambayev and himself, Prosecutor General of Kyrgyzstan Otkurbek Dzhamshitov told reporters here on Tuesday.

He said that the former president is charged with murder of a soldier of special forces, using force against law enforcement officers, organizing mass unrest and hostage-taking.

Atambayev is also suspected of illicit trafficking of weapons and ammunition, Dzhamshitov said.

Preparations for EAEU Intergovernmental Council meeting in Kyrgyzstan underway

BISHKEK, August 8. /TASS/: Preparations for the meeting of the EAEU Intergovernmental Council to be held in the Kyrgyz resort town of Cholpon-Ata on August 9 are underway as normal, spokesman for the Russian embassy in the country Viktor Kharchenko told TASS on Thursday.

"Preparations are underway as normal. Assigned groups are working as planned," he said.

On Wednesday, press service of the Kyrgyz cabinet also stated that the meeting would be held as scheduled.

Kyrgyz ex-President reveals he opened fire at special forces during raid

BISHKEK, August 8. /TASS/: Former Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev has revealed that he was shooting at the special forces officers who were storming his residence, he told reporters on Thursday.

"My supporters did not have weapons, it was me who was shooting during the assault," he said. However, Atambayev assured that he "was trying not to hit" people. According to him, he is also willing to assist the release of the Alfa special forces officers who were captured by his backers and are now  held in his residence.

Kyrgyzstan in crisis after police raid fails to catch ex-leader

08 August 2019; AFP: Kyrgyzstan was on the brink of a full-blown political crisis Thursday after special forces failed to capture the former president during a raid on his compound which left one officer dead and a police chief in a critical condition.

The Central Asian state, which has seen two revolutions in less than two decades, has been roiled by a standoff between ex-leader Almazbek Atambayev and his protege-turned-foe President Sooronbai Jeenbekov.
