Nepal's apex court orders appointment of Deuba as prime minister; reinstates dissolved lower house

Kathmandu, Jul 12 (PTI) In a landmark verdict, Nepal's Supreme Court on Monday directed President Bidya Devi Bhandari to appoint Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister by Tuesday and reinstated the House of Representatives for a second time in five months.

US doses arrive as Nepal struggles to vaccinate population

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A shipment of 1.5 million doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccine donated by the United States arrived Monday in Nepal, which is struggling to inoculate its population against the coronavirus.

“Today’s delivery of the single-dose vaccine means that this single donation is enough to protect over 1.5 million people in Nepal,” U.S. Ambassador Randy Berry said at Kathmandu airport.

The U.S. is also donating vaccines to several other Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Nepal Approves Month-Long Int’l Flights Schedule To 11 Destinations

KATHMANDU, Jul 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) – The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), approved a month-long schedule for Nepali and foreign airlines, to conduct international flights from and to 11 foreign destinations, an official said yesterday.

According to a notice, issued in the name of airlines, the CAAN has greenlighted 21 flights per week, from and to 11 foreign destinations, from today, Jul 1 to Jul 31.

Nepal resumes vaccination campaign with doses given by China

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Nepal resumed its stalled coronavirus vaccination campaign on Tuesday with 1 million doses given by China after the Himalayan nation made international pleas for help with a shortage of doses.

Thousands of people, all 64 years old, lined up at vaccination centers even before they opened. People aged 60 to 63 are scheduled in coming days.

Nepal: New Constitutional Bench formed to hear petitions against House dissolution

Kathmandu, Jun 6 (PTI) A new Constitutional Bench of the Nepal Supreme Court was formed on Sunday to hear a bunch of petitions against the May 22 dissolution of the House of Representatives after differences among justices over its composition delayed the crucial hearing, according to media reports.

The bench was formed by Nepal's Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana on the seniority and expertise of the Supreme Court Justices.

Chinese climber becomes 1st blind Asian to scale Everest

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A Chinese climber who became the first blind Asian to scale Mount Everest says he aims to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents and then travel to the North and South Poles.

Zhang Hong, 44, is also the third blind climber internationally to reach the world’s highest peak.

Following his guides and Sherpas, he reached the summit on May 24 and returned safely to Kathmandu.

Nepal: Virus fails to deter hundreds of climbers on Mount Everest

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A year after Mount Everest was closed to climbers as the pandemic swept across the globe, hundreds are making the final push to the summit with only a few more days left in the season, saying they are undeterred by a coronavirus outbreak in base camp.

Three expedition teams to Everest canceled their climb this month following reports of people getting sick. But the remaining 41 teams decided to continue with hundreds of climbers and their guides scaling the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) top in the season that ends in May, before bad weather sets in.

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A coronavirus outbreak on Mount Everest has infected at least 100 climbers and support staff, an expert mountaineering guide said, giving the first comprehensive estimate amid official Nepalese denials that the disease has spread to the world’s highest peak.

Lukas Furtenbach of Austria, who last week became the only prominent outfitter to halt his Everest expedition due to virus fears, said Saturday one of his foreign guides and six Nepali Sherpa guides have tested positive.

Kathmandu, May 20 (PTI) Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has faced flak for violating the election code of conduct by appealing for votes for a candidate, contesting the National Assembly by-election, during the silence period.

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday indirectly mentioned in a press statement that Oli violated the election code of conduct by asking to vote for Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, a candidate for the National Assembly by-election in Bagmati being held on Thursday.
