Trial on former Malaysian PM Najib's corruption charges begins after delays

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Xinhua) -- A Malaysian court started hearings Wednesday on the corruption charges against former Prime Minister Najib Razak after previous delays.

Najib showed up at the high court in Kuala Lumpur for the hearings on the seven charges, including criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power involving 42 million ringgit (10.3 million U.S. dollars) deposited into his personal bank account from SRC International, a former unit of state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Indonesian freed in Kim Jong Nam murder trial

11 Mar 2019; DW: A court in Malaysia unexpectedly dropped a murder charge against Siti Aisyah on Monday, two years after Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of the North Korean leader, was poisoned in a Kuala Lumpur airport terminal.

"I am surprised and very happy. I didn't expect it," she told reporters, saying she had only learned that morning she would be freed. Aisyah was later seen getting into an embassy car as she left the court.

Ex-Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng to face charges in Malaysian court

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 20 (NNN- Bernama) – The extradition of former Goldman Sachs managing director, Roger Ng to the United States (US) will only be carried out after his cases in the Malaysian courts are completed, said Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said this was the advice of Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to him via an official letter a few days ago informing that Ng has to face charges in Malaysia next month.

Malaysian Govt Guarantees Building One Million Affordable Homes Within 10 Years

PUCHONG, Selangor State, Malaysia, Feb 17 (NNN- BERNAMA) – Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has given an assurance that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government will build one million affordable homes and low-cost houses, within a period of 10 years.

He said, although the government was facing various constraints in fulfilling the pledge, it would still be implemented, to help the less affordable group, especially those in the B40 group.

Malaysia crowns Sultan Abdullah as new king

31 Jan 2019; DW: Malaysia crowned Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of central Pahang state as the country's 16th king on Thursday, following the surprise resignation of Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan on January 6.

The Royal Palace has not said why the previous king abdicated the throne, but online reports and images of Sultan Muhammad's alleged marriage to a former Russian beauty queen appeared in December. The reports have remained unconfirmed by the Palace.

Malaysia says Goldman Sachs must pay, apology not enough

PUTRAYAJAYA, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said Friday that an apology by Goldman Sachs for its role in the alleged multibillion-dollar ransacking of state investment fund 1MDB was insufficient and that it must pay $7.5 billion as compensation.

Goldman CEO David Solomon apologized Wednesday to the Malaysian people for former banker Tim Leissner’s role in arranging bond sales for 1MDB. They provided a means for associates of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to allegedly steal billions over several years from the fund.

Malaysia's King Muhammad V resigns

06 Jan 2019; DW: The ruling monarch of Malaysia has abdicated the throne, palace officials have confirmed. The historic move follows weeks of speculation over the love life of Muhammad V.

Malaysia's King Muhammad V stepped down from the throne on Sunday.

"The National Palace informs that his majesty has resigned as the 15th king effective January 6," the National Palace said in a statement. No reason for his abdication was given.

Malaysia files criminal charges against Goldman Sachs over state fund scandal

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia filed criminal charges on Monday against Goldman Sachs and two former executives over state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

In a statement, Malaysian Attorney General Tommy Thomas said Goldman Sachs and its former bankers Tim Leissner and Roger Ng are were charged under Malaysian laws over their alleged involvement in a scheme to defraud the Malaysian government.

Proton launches 1st SUV with China’s Geely

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian national car maker Proton launched its first SUV on Wednesday in a fresh effort to transform its stale brand and turn around its fortunes, more than a year after China’s Geely Holding Group Co. Ltd. bought a key stake in the company.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad launched the 1.8 liter (0.48 gallon) -engine X70 and expressed hopes for Proton’s recovery.
