India: Sonia Gandhi joins Bharat Jodo Yatra (Unite India Journey) in Karnataka

Pandavapura (KTK), Oct 6 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra here, participating in a public event of the party after a long gap.

Amid cheers and slogan-shouting by party workers, Sonia Gandhi walked besides her son Rahul Gandhi and other leaders for a few kilometres in Mandya district of Karnataka.

India: Murugha Math seer sent to judicial custody

Chitradurga (K'taka), Sep 5 (PTI) A local court here on Monday ordered the chief pontiff of Murugha Math Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who is facing charges of sexual abuse of minor girls, to be sent to judicial custody till September 14.

The judicial custody is for a period of nine days.

The police did not seek extension of the police custody in which he was held since September 2.

Following this, the Second Additional District and Sessions Court sent him to judicial custody.

India: Twitter defiant to laws of the land: Centre tells K'taka HC

Bengaluru, Sep 2 (PTI) The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in its 101-page statement of objections before the Karnataka High Court has termed the microblogging platform Twitter of being defiant to the laws of the land.

The case is slated to be heard on September 8. MeitY filed its statement of objections to the court on Thursday.

Chitradurga (KTK), Aug 3 (PTI) Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday got initiated into the Lingayat sect by the seer of Muruga Mutt in this district headquarters town in central Karnataka in the presence of various party leaders.

After a conversation with Lingayat seers of various mutts, the seer of Muruga Mutt, Shivamurthy Muruga Sharana initiated Gandhi into Lingayat sect.

India: POCSO case against Bishop quashed by Karnataka HC

Bengaluru, June 15 (PTI) The Karnataka High Court has quashed the criminal proceedings against Reverend Prasanna Kumar Samuel in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Prasanna Kumar Samuel is a Bishop of Church of South India (CSI) Karnataka Central Diocese, Bengaluru.

India: Electric Vehicle Expo 2022 to begin on May 6 in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, May 4 (PTI) Karnataka Electric Vehicles-Manufacturers and Dealers Association (KEVMDA), in collaboration with Key Media, is organising a national-level electric vehicle (EV) exhibition 'EV Expo 2022' here from May 6-8.

The expo is set to be held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC).

Over 100 firms manufacturing two-wheelers and four-wheelers, battery companies, spare-parts manufacturers, distributors, and financial service providers are expected to participate in it, said a release from KEVMDA.

India: Anti-Muslim communal hate on rise in Karnataka State

12 April 2022; MEMO: Earlier this year, when a group of Muslim school girls in the southern Indian State of Karnataka were barred from entering the classroom wearing the hijab, or headscarf, no one expected the issue to snowball into a series of hate campaigns against the Muslim community in the State, Anadolu News Agency reports.

In recent weeks, right-wing groups in the State have launched anti-Muslim campaigns, including the exclusion of Muslim traders from fairs near Hindu temples and a push to ban halal meat.

Hindi is not India's national language, will never let it happen: Siddaramaiah

India: Trial in journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh killing to start from May 27

Bengaluru, Apr 6 (PTI) More than four years after journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead by motorcycle-borne men outside her house here, the trial in the case is set to start from May 27, the prosecution lawyer said.

The hearing of the case had not started yet. It will start now from May 27, senior advocate S Balan told PTI.

According to him, more than 60 lawyers were engaged initially by the accused, and their petitions delayed commencement of the trial.

India hijab issue: 40 Muslim girls abstain from PU exams in Udupi

Mangaluru, Mar 30 (PTI) Forty Muslim girl students from Udupi district of Karnataka abstained from appearing for the first pre-university examination on Tuesday as they were apparently hurt by the recent High Court verdict against wearing of hijab inside classrooms.

The students decided to not appear for the examination without wearing the headscarf as they were hurt by the March 15 order, sources said.
