India: Ambulance driver attempts to rape COVID-19 patient in Karnataka

Kalaburagi, Jun 9 (PTI) A driver of a private ambulance allegedly attempted to rape a COVID-19 patient at a government hospital here, following which he was arrested.

According to police, the accused entered the cardiology department of the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Science, where the 25-year-old victim was undergoing treatment and tried to rape her on Tuesday night.

As she screamed, other patients woke up and raised an alarm.

Soon, the accused fled the spot, police said.

India: Two more arrested for blocking beds for COVID patients in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, May 27 (PTI) Two more people were arrested in connection with a scam related to blocking beds meant for COVID patients in Bengaluru hospitals including private ones, police said.

The police have identified the accused as Yashwanth and Varun.

With the two arrests, the total number went up to 11, police said.

"Varun worked in the South zone war room helpline, who shared patient numbers with his friend Yashwanth. Yashwanth used to contact the patient and demand money," police said in a statement.

India: Ten policemen test positive for COVID-19 in Karnataka

Mangaluru, May 22 (PTI): A police station at Padubidri in Udupi district of Karnataka has been sealed for 24 hours after 10 police personnel, including the sub-inspector, tested positive for coronavirus.

One of the policemen tested positive when he was subjected to the test after he developed fever recently, sources said on Saturday.

Subsequently, all the personnel were tested and results of 10 of them turned out positive, they said.

All the infected personnel have been placed under quarantine, the sources said.

India: BJP leader and former union minister Babagouda Patil dead

Bengaluru, May 21 (PTI) Former union minister and eminent farmer leader Babagouda Patil died at a hospital in Belagavi on Friday, family sources said.

The 76-year old leader was undergoing treatment at the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital where he died, the sources said.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

Born on January 6, 1945 at Chikka Bagewadi in Belagavi district, Patil did his BSc at RL Science Institute in Belagavi.

India: Man marries sisters, including minor

Kolar, May 17 (PTI) A 30-year-old man has been arrested for marrying two sisters, including a minor, and remanded in judicial custody, police said on Monday.

Umapathi from a village in Mulabagilu in Kolar district of Karnataka married his sister's daughters, one aged 19 and the other 16.

"Umapathi's sister agreed to the marriage because her second daughter had speech-related problems," a police officer told PTI.

India: ''Frustrated'' COVID patient hangs self in hospital ward in Karnataka

Haveri (Karnataka), May 14 (PTI) A 70-year-old COVID-19 patient died by suicide in the special ward for the virus patients at the district hospital here, police said on Friday.

CCTV footage, which went viral, showed the man taking the extreme step after everyone else in the ward went to sleep, the police said.

India: First Oxygen Express reaches Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 11 (PTI) The first Oxygen Express to Karnataka, carrying 120 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen reached the city on Tuesday.

According to South Western Railway, the oxygen express carrying six cryogenic containers with medical oxygen weighing 120 tonnes departed from Jharkhand on Monday and arrived at the Inland Container Depot in Whitefield here this morning.

India: Five held in connection with 'Hospital bed scam'

Bengaluru, May 7 (PTI) Five people have been arrested so far for allegedly blocking beds in private hospitals in the city for COVID patients, police said on Friday.

"Other than four-five people, we have not arrested anyone else though our investigations are on," a police officer probing the matter told PTI.

India: Lockdown could be inevitable in K'taka if people do not cooperate: Yediyurappa

Bengaluru, May 7 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday said a lockdown to curb the rise in COVID-19 cases could be inevitable if people do not cooperate.

"People are not following the Janata Curfew properly.

They are not abiding by our warnings. Hence, lockdown could be inevitable," he told reporters near Annamma Devi Temple here ahead of a crucial meeting later Friday in view of the alarming rise in coronavirus cases.

India: Cong flays BJP for 'communalising' hospital bed scam

Bengaluru, May 5 (PTI) The Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday flayed the BJP for 'communalising' the hospital bed scam, pertaining to 'blocking' the beds in fake names for COVID-19 patients on payment of exorbitant amounts.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya had on Tuesday alleged that hospitals in the city 'blocked' at least 4,065 beds in fake names to make a killing at a time when COVID-19 cases were rising in the country and Karnataka.
