India: Congress seeks FIR against Amit Shah for saying Karnataka would be 'afflicted by riots' if INC wins

Bengaluru, Apr 27 (PTI) Congress leaders on Thursday complained to the police against Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his alleged statement that if their party won the upcoming elections, then Karnataka would be “afflicted with riots", and claimed he said it with the clear intent of disrupting the communal harmony in the state.

It also requested the police that an "urgent and immediate" FIR be lodged against the former BJP chief and others for the "offences".

India: 5,102 nominations filed by 3,632 candidates for Karnataka polls, scrutiny on Apr 21

Bengaluru, Apr 20 (PTI) Over 3,600 candidates have filed a total of 5,102 nominations for the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka till Thursday, the last day for filing of the papers, election officials said here.

The process of filing nominations papers began on April 13 with the election notification being issued.

India: Ex-CM Jagadish Shettar resigns from BJP over denial of ticket for K’taka assembly elections

Hubballi (K’taka), Apr 15 (PTI) Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar on Sunday announced his resignation from the BJP after he was denied a ticket for the May 10 Karnataka assembly elections.

The 67-year-old leader said he would tender his resignation from the party as well as the assembly.

Shettar, who was the leader of the opposition when the Congress was in power, also said he would contest the upcoming assembly election for sure.

India: BJP fields heavyweights against top Cong leaders in Assembly polls, announces 189 candidates

New Delhi/Bengaluru, Apr 11 (PTI) Taking the fight to the opposition camp, the ruling BJP on Tuesday chose to field heavyweights against top Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections, spicing up the poll scene.

The party declared candidates for 189 constituencies out of the total 224 and the list includes 52 new faces.

At least eight legislators including Minister Angara, representing Sulia, have been denied the ticket.

Bengaluru, Apr 11 (PTI) Ordering the release of rice bags seized from a social worker here, the Karnataka High Court has clarified that the election officers have the authority to search and confiscate materials only after the elections are announced.

Justice M Nagaprasanna in his recent judgement on a petition filed by Isthiyak Ahmed, held that the Returning Officer or the election officials do not have any jurisdiction to search or seize any material before the announcement of elections.

India: BJP youth wing leader murder; 3 more arrested in Karnataka

New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI) The NIA arrested three more alleged conspirators behind the murder of BJP youth wing leader Praveen Nettaru during searches at multiple locations in Karnataka on Saturday, an official spokesperson said.

The National Investigation Agency carried out the searches at five locations in Dakshina Kannada, Hubli and Mysuru and arrested K Mahammad Iqbal, K Ismail Shafi and Ibrahim Sha, the spokesperson said.

India: Viral video shows Karnataka gov minister assaulting woman

Chamarajanagar (K'taka), Oct 23 (PTI) Karnataka Housing Minister V Somanna was caught up in controversy for allegedly slapping a woman in a village in Gundlupet here when she went with a plea to resolve her grievance.

The minister has not yet reacted to the incident but the woman said Somanna was only consoling her after she tried to prostrate before him with a plea to allot her a government plot.
