Cuban FM slams intervention, calls for mobilization to defend Venezuela

HAVANA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Saturday called for mobilization to defend Venezuela and "stop the imperialist intervention in Latin America."

"The U.S. government, the true mastermind behind the coup d'etat vs. Venezuela, is threatening to launch a military aggression against that sister nation. It is putting pressure on Europe to become its accomplice," Rodriguez tweeted.

"Let's all mobilize to stop the imperialist intervention in Latin America," he added.

Cuba reports meteorite strike

02 Feb 2019; DW: There were two strong explosions reported over Vinales and the Pinar del Rio area in western Cuba on Friday afternoon before small black stones fell to the ground, witnesses said. The largest fragment of about 11 centimeters (4 inches) was found in a small crater.

The meteorite had been seen flying over the Florida Keys earlier on Friday, according to the US National Weather Service in Key West.

Tornado hits Havana; Cuban president says 3 dead, 174 hurt

HAVANA, Cuba (AP) — Cuba’s president says a tornado in eastern Havana has killed three people and injured 174 others.

The Cuban capital was battered late Sunday and early Monday by powerful winds and heavy rains. A blackout hit many Havana neighborhoods around 9 p.m.

Early Monday, President Miguel Diaz-Canel posted photos of himself on Twitter with rescue workers besides what appeared to be a vehicle overturned by the storm. Little further information about the storm appeared in state media.

Cuba rejects latest U.S. "political maneuver" on suspended law

HAVANA, JAN. 17 (Xinhua) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Thursday rejected what he called the latest "provocation" by the United States, which aims to bolster legal action against Cuban nationalization of property.

"We vehemently reject this new interventionist provocation which violates international law. The U.S. government is showing its contempt for the rest of the world," Diaz-Canel said via Twitter.

Internet access via mobile phones starts for all Cubans

HAVANA (AP) — For the first time, average Cubans became eligible to sign up for internet service for their mobile phones Thursday, a development long awaited on the communist-ruled island.

Users began receiving text messages in the morning from the state telephone monopoly informing them that they can buy an internet access packages for 3G service.

Cuba welcomes more Chinese investment, visitors to boost tourism

HAVANA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Cuba is working hard to boost the Caribbean island nation's tourism industry, with a focus on attracting more Chinese investment and tourists.

Cuban Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero said on Wednesday that this also comes as part of an effort to expand Cuba-China tourism cooperation.

He told Xinhua shortly after the inauguration of the 22nd edition of the Meetings and Incentives Travel Market (MITM) Americas business fair that one of the event's objectives is to get more Chinese people to learn more about Cuba.

Cuba open to talk to U.S. without political conditions, says president

HAVANVA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Sunday said his government is open to talks with the United States based on respect towards the island country's sovereignty, independence and its political system.

In an interview to Latin American network TeleSUR, Diaz-Canel said that after U.S. President Donald Trump came into power, relations between Havana and Washington have faced a "serious setback."

Cuban official denies U.S. allegations of "sonic attacks"

HAVANA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Cuban official on Tuesday denied U.S. allegations of so-called "sonic attacks" on its diplomatic personnel, calling them as fabricated.

"There has been no attack or deliberate act against any American diplomat, and the (U.S.) State Department knows it," Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, director for U.S. affairs at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, said in an interview published by state daily Granma.
