KAMPALA, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan parliament on Thursday passed a bill that will permit the donation and transplant of human organs.

The Uganda Human Organ Donation and Transplant Bill 2021 is aimed at regulating the donation of organs, cells and tissues as well as their transplant.

Minister of Health Ruth Aceng said in a televised plenary session that the demand for organ transplants was high, yet there was no law in place.

KAMPALA, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- A Ugandan military helicopter crashed in the western district of Kabarole Saturday but no casualties were caused, a military spokesperson confirmed.

Felix Kulayigye, a military spokesperson, tweeted that the MI-24 helicopter developed a mechanical fault while in flight and the pilot made an emergency landing.

"Fortunately no casualties both to the occupants of the plane and on the ground," he said.

Kulayigye said a team has been dispatched to the crash site from the air force headquarters to establish the cause of the accident.

20 Sep 2022; MEMO: Uganda and Israel, on Tuesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on defence, amid growing criticism in the country over Israel's hacking software, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The signing ceremony took place in the capital, Kampala.

Uganda was represented by Rosette Byengoma, while Israel was represented by Asaf Dvir.

KAMPALA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Health experts on Tuesday urged Uganda to focus on preventing and controlling the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, noting that there is no vaccine against the rare Sudan strain that broke out in the country.

This follows a Tuesday announcement by the country's ministry of health that the Ebola virus had broken out and has so far left one confirmed case dead and six other unverified deaths.

KAMPALA, Sept 19 (NNN-NEWVISION) — President Yoweri Museveni has offered assurance that Uganda’s oil project “shall proceed as stipulated in the contract we have with TotalEnergies and CNOOC [China National Offshore Oil Corporation]”.

His reassurance came only days after a motion moved in the European Union (EU) Parliament that seeks to block the construction of the proposed $3.8b (sh14 trillion) East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

The motion is on account of breach of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Uganda and Tanzania.

17 August 2022; MEMO: Human rights groups asked the Israeli Defence Ministry to stop permitting a company to sell its phone hacking tool to Uganda, claiming it is used for rights abuses, Haaretz reports.

According to the report, Israeli software company, Cellebrite, has sold its UFED phone-hacking software to the Ugandan police and security services.

International human rights groups signed on to the letter sent to the Defence Ministry against arms sales to human rights violators.

NAKASONGOLA (Uganda), July 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday to launch Uganda’s second armoured vehicle factory in Nakasongola. 

The factory was built by the United Arab Emirates firm, Streit Group, in partnership with the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) commercial arm that produces goods and services, the cars are for both civilians and military.  

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A Ugandan opposition figure who is calling for street protests against rising commodity prices is being detained inside his home by police.

Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, has been unable to leave his home outside the capital, Kampala, since May 12, with police pitching camp nearby to enforce his apparent house arrest. Ugandan police routinely detain opposition figures inside their homes, insisting they can impose preventive arrest to maintain public order.

KAMPALA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has cleared Uganda to start building a nuclear facility for power generation, a visiting top official of the agency said here.

According to a State House statement issued here, Aline Des Cloizeaux, IAEA's director in charge of Nuclear Power for Africa, told Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni Monday that IAEA has come up with recommendations for the East African country to start building and production of nuclear power.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Public fetes celebrating the son of Uganda’s leader are raising concern that he is aiming for the presidency after years of apparently being groomed to succeed his father, President Yoweri Museveni, who has held power since 1986.

Three events marking Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 48th birthday have been held in recent days in the capital, Kampala, and his supporters in other parts of this East African country have staged lively rallies they said were in tribute to their future president.
