Australia: NSW Gov under fire for slow response to new COVID-19 outbreak

Sydney, Jan 2 (AP-PTI) Australia's leading medical group says the New South Wales state government has put the rest of the country at risk by its decision not to go "hard and early" in its response to the COVID-19 outbreak on Sydney's northern beaches, which is suspected to have also caused new cases in neighboring Victoria state.

On Saturday, Victoria recorded 10 new local cases, bringing active cases in the state to 29. Trace testing has linked the new Melbourne coronavirus cluster to the New South Wales outbreak.

Cricket Australia bans mini bar in hotel rooms for Big Bash

Sydney, Dec 4 (PTI) Players taking part in the upcoming Big Bash League will not have the mini bar at their disposal in hotel rooms with Cricket Australia aiming to minimise interaction between staff and cricketers to reduce the risk of any COVID-19 infections.

A "BBL Hub" will be created at the hotels for all stakeholders of the league to minimise exposure to the outside world during the league starting December 10.

A Round Table meet on Human Rights in India was organised at the New South Wales Parliament in Sydney by members of the Australian Greens that included Federal Senator Janet Rice, New South Wales Member of Parliament David Shoebrodge and former Senator Lee Rhiannon, in collaboration with The Humanism Project, an Australian based human rights and political advocacy group.

Australia: Police arrest leader of Sydney protests against racism

Sydney, Jul 28 (AP/PTI) Police arrested a leader of an anti-racism protest and shut down the demonstration before it started Tuesday after courts ruled the gathering in downtown Sydney was illegal due to the pandemic threat.

Organiser Paddy Gibson was among a number of people arrested in a park known as The Domain before the rally was due to start at noon. Two police officers were photographed leading a defiant Gibson away.

Statues Of Colonial-Era Explorer Defaced In Australia

SYDNEY, June 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Australian police were investigating a second case of vandalism, on a statue of British explorer, Captain James Cook, today, following a spate of similar attacks worldwide.

Over the weekend a statue of Cook in Sydney’s Hyde Park was spray painted with the words, “no pride in genocide,” while a second statue of Cook, several kilometres away in the suburb of Randwick received a similar treatment.

Passengers Of Another COVID-19-Hit Cruise Ship “Allowed To Disembark” Without Checks In Aussie Harbour

SYDNEY, Apr 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Passengers of a cruise ship, hit by the COVID-19 outbreak, were allowed to disembark at Australia’s harbour city, despite informing authorities there were 13 people sick on board.

The vessel, Ovation of the Seas, told federal authorities about its ill passengers, including three suffering high temperatures, before docking at Sydney’s Circular Quay, on Mar 18, the Seven News channel reported.
