Celebration in Laayoune after US adopts map of Morocco that includes Western Sahara

RABAT, Dec 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States adopted a “new official” map of Morocco that includes the disputed territory of Western Sahara, the ambassador to Rabat said.

“This map is a tangible representation of President Trump’s bold proclamation two days ago — recognising Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara,” Ambassador David Fischer said according to a statement.

He then signed the “new official US government map of the kingdom of Morocco” at a ceremony at the US embassy in the capital Rabat.

14 Dec 2020; MEMO:  The US announced its adoption of a new map of Morocco on Saturday that includes the disputed Western Sahara, after recognising the Kingdom's sovereignty over the territory.

Ambassador David Fisher made the announcement on the fringe of the signing ceremony of the new map at the US Embassy in Rabat.

Morocco builds ties with Israel in return for recognition of its authority over Western Sahara

11 Dec 2020; MEMO:  Israel and Morocco have today agreed to normalise relations in a deal brokered with the help of US President Donald Trump.

As part of the agreement, Trump agreed to recognise Morocco's sovereignty over the Western Sahara, where there has been a decades-old territorial dispute with Morocco pitted against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, a breakaway movement that seeks to establish an independent state in the territory, Reuters reported.

Morocco: Former minister announces new phase in Western Sahara conflict

24 Nov 2020; MEMO: A former spokesman for the Moroccan government, Mustapha El-Khalfi, has said that there is a "new phase" in the Western Sahara issue, after recent tension in the region. "Morocco will not stand idly by while the separatists are trying to alter the Moroccan Western Sahara Wall," he insisted, referring to a buffer zone on the border of the region in which the UN forces are deployed.

UK, Morocco to boost security cooperation in Med and Sahel

06 Nov 2020; MEMO: Moroccan and British military officials yesterday discussed the security situation in the Mediterranean and Sahel regions during a meeting in the capital Rabat amid plans to strengthen defence ties.

Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita received the British Minister of the Armed Forces James Heappey who was accompanied by the British Ambassador to Morocco Simon Martin and the UK’s Defence Senior Adviser for the Middle East, Lieutenant General John Lorimer.

Morocco: Former PM Benkirane demand apology from France

01 Nov 2020; MEMO: Former Moroccan PM Abdelilah Benkirane has demanded that France apologize and practice moderation, after insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Benkirane said in his first statement for several months months, during a speech broadcasted on Facebook: “I am sure that French President Emmanuel Macron made a mistake, especially when he adopted as head of state an insult against the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and yet no French citizen should be assaulted.”

Morocco, U.S. sign 10-year military cooperation road map: sources

RABAT, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Morocco and the United States on Friday signed a 10-year defense cooperation road map, said diplomatic sources.

The agreement was signed in the capital Rabat by Morocco's Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

According to diplomatic sources, the agreement will improve defense cooperation, partnerships and interoperability between the two countries.

Esper's visit to Morocco, which will conclude on Saturday, is the final stop on his North African tour including Tunisia and Algeria.
