Over 80 people killed in attack in Ethiopian border region with Sudan - state rights commission

NAIROBI (Reuters) - More than 80 civilians were killed in an attack on Tuesday in the Benishangul-Gumuz region on Ethiopia’s border with Sudan, the state-appointed Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said on Wednesday.

“We have received information that over 80 civilians have been killed in yet another massacre,” Aaron Maasho, a senior advisor at the commission, told Reuters on Wednesday.

The region where the attack occurred borders Sudan. More than 220 people were killed in an attack last month in the same region.

Kenya drops charges against officials due to testify against ex-finance minister

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya dropped charges on Tuesday against two senior former officials who prosecutors said had agreed to provide testimony against a former finance minister and others accused of corruption over the awarding of tenders to build two dams.

Kamau Thugge, at the time the number two official at the finance ministry, and Susan Koech, an official at the tourism ministry, were among a number of officials charged in the case a year ago, including then-Finance Minister Henry Rotich.

Kenya: Clinical officers agree to end strike after deal with the Ministry

NAIROBI, Jan 2 (NNN-KBC) — Clinical officers in Kenya have agreed to end their strike that has paralyzed the Country’s public health system for the last 26-day.

This after the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers signed a return to work deal with the Ministry of Health.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the Government remains committed to ensuring continuity of service in public health facilitates and will do everything possible to ensure all health workers on strike resume duty as soon as possible.

UN, Ethiopia sign deal for aid access to embattled Tigray

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — In a breakthrough a month after deadly conflict cut off Ethiopia’s Tigray region from the world, the United Nations on Wednesday said it and the Ethiopian government have signed a deal to allow “unimpeded” humanitarian access, at least for areas under federal government control after the prime minister’s declaration of victory over the weekend.

‘Stop the madness,’ Tigray leader urges Ethiopia’s PM

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The fugitive leader of Ethiopia’s defiant Tigray region on Monday called on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to “stop the madness” and withdraw troops from the region as he asserted that fighting continues “on every front” two days after Abiy declared victory.

Debretsion Gebremichael, in a phone interview with The Associated Press, said he remains near the Tigray capital, Mekele, which the Ethiopian army on Saturday said it now controlled. Far from accepting Abiy’s declaration of victory, the Tigray leader asserted that “we are sure we’ll win.”

UN: Ethiopia’s victory claim doesn’t mean war is finished

US reports several explosions heard in Eritrea’s capital

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The U.S. Embassy in Eritrea says six explosions were heard Saturday night in the capital, Asmara. It follows an embassy report of another “loud noise, possibly an explosion” in the city on Friday, nearly two weeks after the government of neighboring Ethiopia’s defiant Tigray region confirmed firing missiles at the city during its war with Ethiopian federal forces.

Ethiopia declares victory as military takes Tigray capital

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ethiopia’s military has gained “full control” of the capital of the defiant Tigray region, the army announced Saturday, and the prime minister said the taking of Mekele marked the “completion” of an offensive that started nearly four weeks ago. The regional government said the city of a half-million people was “heavily bombarded” in the final push to arrest its leaders.

“God bless Ethiopia and its people!” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a statement. “We have entered Mekele without innocent civilians being targets.”
