China launches new twin BeiDou navigation satellites

XICHANG, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday successfully sent twin BeiDou navigation satellites into space on a single carrier rocket.

The Long March-3B carrier rocket lifted off from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 7:52 a.m.. It was the 283rd mission of the Long March rocket series, said a source of the launch center.

The twin satellites entered orbit more than three hours after the launch. After a series of tests, they will work together with 10 other BeiDou-3 satellites already in orbit.

U.S. leading driverless car enterprise sets up company in Shanghai

China says must 'counter-attack' latest US tariffs

Beijing, Aug 23 (AFP) China today said it would continue to "counter-attack" as Washington imposed new tariffs on USD 16 billion worth of its goods, further inflaming trade tensions.

The US moves were "clearly suspected" of violating World Trade Organization rules, the commerce ministry said in a statement, adding that it would file a lawsuit against them under the WTO's dispute resolution mechanism.

Chinese firms plan more soybean meal substitute imports to offset plunge in U.S. soybean imports

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese companies are confident in securing overseas supplies of soybeans and soybean meal substitutes to counter the fall in imports of U.S. soybeans, according to industry insiders.

A survey of related firms points to widespread readiness and proactiveness in the industry as Chinese firms turn to more competitive suppliers from South America and other parts of the world.

During the May-August period, over 36 million tonnes of South American soybeans arrived in China, with more to come in November.

China building 4 million homes in rundown urban areas: ministry

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Work has begun on the building of 4.07 million homes in rundown urban areas during the first seven months of the year, official data showed.

This marks a 70-percent completion of the annual target with an investment of over 990 billion yuan (about 143.6 billion U.S. dollars), according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

China will launch a new three-year renovation plan to address housing in rundown urban areas, with 5.8 million units to be constructed this year, according to this year's government work report.

China seeks WTO dispute settlement over US safeguard measures, subsidies

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday launched the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement procedure over U.S. safeguard measures on imported photovoltaic products and subsidies for its renewable energy products, the Ministry of Commerce said.

"As the U.S. measures severely damaged Chinese trade interests, China's choice to resort to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism is a necessary move to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests and multilateral trade rules," a spokesperson with the ministry said.

China protests against signing of U.S. defense act

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday expressed strong dissatisfaction with the U.S. government as it passed and signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019, which includes negative China-related contents, in disregard of China's opposition.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed the NDAA for Fiscal Year 2019 into law. The bill includes clauses such as directing a whole-of-government strategy on China and submitting the assessment and plan on strengthening Taiwan's force readiness.

Belt and Road Initiative helps with refugee work: UNHCR

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Belt and Road Initiative could "definitely" help with global refugee work, said United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi who completed an official visit to China on Saturday.

"Much of what China does through the Belt and Road Initiative converges with what we are doing in refugee-hosting countries, linking humanitarian and development aid to better address long-term problems and seek solutions to refugee crisis," said Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

China decides to impose additional tariffs on 16 bln USD of U.S. imports

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- China has decided to impose additional tariffs on imported products from the United States worth about 16 billion U.S. dollars, according to an official statement released Wednesday.

Approved by the State Council, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council has decided to impose additional duties of 25 percent on the 16-billion-dollar U.S. products after making proper adjustments to the second part of a list of the products subject to the tariffs.

The additional duties will take effect at 12:01 on Aug. 23, 2018.
