RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A gang of gunmen reportedly attacked a bar in the capital of Brazil’s northern Pará state Sunday afternoon, and authorities said 11 people were killed.

The state security agency confirmed late Sunday only that six women and five men died in the incident in the Guamá neighborhood of the Pará state capital, Belem.

The G1 news website said police reported that seven gunmen were involved in the attack, which also wounded one person. The news outlet said the attackers arrived at the bar on one motorcycle and in three cars.

Brazilian president considering traveling to Texas after NYC visit canceled

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 6 (Xinhua): Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is considering traveling to the U.S. state of Texas where he may meet with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, his spokesperson said Monday, days after he canceled a trip to New York City.

Plans for a potential trip by Bolsonaro to Dallas city for an event scheduled for May 14-16 are still being finalized, spokesperson Otavio Rego Barros told a regular press briefing.

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 2 (Xinhua): Brazil legend Pele on Thursday paid tribute to Lionel Messi after the forward scored his 600th goal for Barcelona during his team's 3-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal.

The 31-year-old Argentina international reached the milestone with a curling 30-yard free-kick, his second goal of Wednesday's match at the Camp Nou, as Barcelona edged toward a place in the final.

Brazil's Souza suspended amid corruption probe

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), the sport's anti-corruption body, has provisionally banned Brazilian ATP world tour player Joao Souza.

In a statement on Saturday, the London-based organization did not provide details of the suspension but said it formed part of an anti-corruption program involving the ATP and WTA - the main men's and women's tours - and world tennis governing body ITF.

The probe is being headed by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren, who has previously investigated cases related to match fixing.

Brazil's ex-President Michel Temer remains silent under questioning

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazilian President Michel Temer decided to remain silent when being questioned on Friday, local authorities reported.

Temer, who was arrested Thursday on corruption charges and spent the night in a room at the Rio Federal Police headquarters, has told authorities that he would exercize his right to silence.

The prosecution office accused Temer as being the leader of a group that committed crimes of corruption, embezzlement and money laundering.

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's former President Michel Temer was arrested on Thursday in a corruption investigation, according to local media.

The arrest was ordered by Judge Marcelo Bretas, who is in charge of the Operation Car Wash investigations on corruption in the government.

Temer, the predecessor of current President Jair Bolsonaro, left office last year.

The police reportedly also seek Moreira Franco, who served as Minister of Mines and Energy in the Temer government, and Eliseu Padilha, who served as Temer's Chief of Staff.

Brazilian police arrest youth involved in school shooting

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Police arrested a young man for allegedly helping plan the school attack in Sao Paulo on March 13 that left 10 dead, the local police said on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old man was arrested at his home in Suzano, metropolitan Sao Paulo, and was then transferred into custody of judicial facilities because he is a minor, according to a report by Sao Paulo's Civil Police.

The adolescent made voluntary statements before the court on Thursday but was released after he denied taking part in the attack.
