SAN SALVADOR, March 1 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Thousands of alleged gang members in El Salvador, 60 percent of nearly 65,000, will never return to the streets, the Minister of Justice and Security Gustavo Villatoro said.
Sixty percent of those arrested under the exception regime will be sent to the Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), the minister reported, who said that they will ensure that those who arrive at these facilities will not leave again.
Only ‘members will be sent to the modern penitentiary, considered the largest in the region of the Americas, there is no social base, no paros, no posts, no checkpoints.
The message is clear, they are not going to get out of jail and we are going to make sure as a government that they do not set foot in the communities again, the high official said, who expressed that they will be tried for the crimes committed now and those committed more than 10 years ago.
The prison is designed so that the only people who have contact with the gang members are the security guards; there is a security protocol even for them, he said, reiterating the total isolation that the inmates will face.
From the minister’s statements it is inferred that the inmates are sentenced to life imprisonment without the right to freedom.
