Vietnam's authorities confiscate 98 kg synthetic drugs

HANOI, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnamese authorities have seized 98 kg of synthetic drugs sent from Germany, Vietnam News Agency reported on Friday.

Three people have been arrested for their involvement in this case, the news agency cited Colonel Pham Quynh, deputy head of the Drug Crime Investigation Department under Hanoi City Police.

Upon examining suspicious parcels sent from Germany to Vietnam via Noi Bai International Airport, the police and customs forces of the capital Hanoi have found and seized 98 kg of synthetic drugs, he said.

The drugs confiscated included 45 kg ecstasy (MDMA) and 53 kg ketamine hidden in parcels, he said, adding that the authorities are further investigating the case.

According to Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal drugs also faces the death penalty.
