Hundreds of ADF fighters killed in DR Congo following Uganda airstrikes – Pres Museveni

KAMPALA, Dec 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Ugandan troops killed about 200 ADF fighters in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the military operations to flush out the Daesh group-affiliated militants continue, Uganda’s president said.

“We have been carrying out air attacks on the terrorists in Congo,” President Yoweri Museveni said on X, formerly Twitter, adding that around “200 of them were killed” in strikes carried out on Sept 16.

More strikes against the fighters have been carried out since then, Museveni added, without giving further details.

Uganda bans imports of used clothing from 'dead people'

KAMPALA, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has banned the importation of used clothing into the east African country, saying it stifles the development of local textile industries and that the clothes belonged to dead Westerners.

Like most African countries, Uganda has traditionally imported large quantities of used clothing, which some consumers prefer because it is low-cost.

But local manufacturers complain the dumping of second-hand apparel swamps the market, undermining Uganda's ability to climb the value chain of the cotton and textile industry.

Senior ADF commander killed in Uganda, DR Congo joint military operation

KAMPALA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan military on Sunday said it has killed a senior commander of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels and three of his fighters in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) in a joint operation with the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) killed Lubangakane, one of the most senior ADF commanders in Mwalika valley, North Kivu province in the eastern DRC, the military said in a statement issued here.

Ugandan border town prepares to bury victims of rebel massacre that left 42 dead, mostly students

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A bereaved Ugandan border town on Sunday began burying the victims of a brutal attack on a school by suspected extremist rebels that left 42 people dead, most of them students, as security forces stepped up patrols along the frontier with volatile eastern Congo.

One of eight people wounded in Friday night’s attack, in which 38 students were killed, died overnight, said Selevest Mapoze, mayor of the town of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha.

“Most of the relatives have come to take their bodies” from the morgue, he said.

25 students killed as rebels attack school in western Uganda

17 June 2023; MEMO: Terrorists on Friday night attacked a secondary school in western Uganda's district of Kasese, killing 25 students and injuring eight others seriously, according to police.

In a statement, police spokesman Fred Enanga said that after killing the students, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels looted the property before setting the schools' dormitories on fire.

At least 41 killed in rebel attack on Ugandan school near Congo border

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Suspected rebels attacked a school in a remote area of Uganda near the Congo border, killing at least 41 people in a nighttime raid before fleeing across the porous frontier, authorities said. Thirty-eight students in their dormitories were among the victims.

Some students were burned beyond recognition, and others were shot or hacked to death after militants armed with guns and machetes attacked the school in the frontier district of Kasese, a local mayor told The Associated Press.

Uganda says 54 AU peacekeepers killed in May 26 attack in Somalia

KAMPALA, June 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 54 soldiers who served as African Union peacekeepers were killed when militants attacked a base housing Ugandan units in Somalia last week, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said.

“We discovered the lifeless bodies of 54 fallen soldiers, including a commander,” Museveni said in a statement posted on his official Twitter account late Saturday.

Al-Shabaab, which has been waging a deadly insurgency against Somalia’s fragile central government for more than a decade, claimed responsibility for the dawn attack on May 26.

Uganda secures 3,000 jobs for nurses in UK, Middle East

KAMPALA, May 25 (NNN-GNA) — The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union (UNMU) President Justus Cherop said engagements are underway to send some of the 3,000 well-skilled nurses who are not employed by the government to work abroad.

His remarks came following ongoing plans by some labour companies in the country to send nurses to work in the United Kingdom and the Middle East.

“We have about 5,000 nurses graduating from institutions and universities every year. The government can absorb around 2,000 every financial year,” Cherop said.

Death toll from western Uganda landslides rises to 13

KAMPALA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and six others seriously injured in landslides and mudslides triggered by torrential rains in several villages in western Uganda between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the police and a relief agency.

"The police have visited the scenes. We are working with the local leaders and disaster management committees to respond to the situation," said Elly Matte, Kigezi regional police spokesperson, in a statement Wednesday.

Uganda rules out Ebola outbreak after results from suspected case turn negative

KAMPALA, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Uganda has ruled out an Ebola outbreak after laboratory results of a suspected case turned negative.

PCR tests carried out on a fatal Ebola suspect case from Buwenge, Jinja District in eastern Uganda, turned negative for Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers, said Ugandan Ministry of Health in a tweet post on Sunday.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers are illnesses caused by several types of viruses. Some of these viruses cause mild illness. Many others lead to life-threatening diseases with no known cures. One of the best known of this group is the Ebola virus.
