USA: Officer testifies on Day 3 of trial over Daunte Wright death

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A patrol sergeant who was backing up other officers after Daunte Wright was pulled over took the stand Friday as prosecutors resumed their case in the manslaughter trial of former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter.

Mychal Johnson, who was working as a patrol sergeant in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center at the time of Wright’s killing, was trying to help get Wright out of his car when Potter shot and killed Wright after she says she mistakenly fired her gun instead of her Taser.

USA: Video dominates as trial starts in Daunte Wright killing

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prosecutors building their case against a suburban Minneapolis police officer who killed Black motorist Daunte Wright repeatedly played body-camera video of the fatal shooting, with the officer heard shouting “Taser!” and then collapsing in wails of “Oh my God!” after she had instead fired her handgun.

They used their opening statement Wednesday to portray Kim Potter as a veteran cop who had been repeatedly trained in Taser use, including warnings on avoiding such deadly mix-ups.

USA: Shadow of Floyd, Chauvin case hangs over Kim Potter’s trial

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — It’s former Officer Kim Potter who’s on trial for the killing of Daunte Wright, but the trial in the same courtroom earlier this year of ex-cop Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd is casting a shadow over the proceedings.

During jury selection last week, there was little mention of Chauvin or Floyd, whose death sparked outrage over police brutality in the U.S. The court has seemed determined at times not to bring it up.

USA: Minneapolis mayor faces voters with policing on their minds

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was the face of the city through some of its darkest days — the death of George Floyd under an officer’s knee last year and rioting that marred the ensuing protests, including the burning of a police precinct after Frey ordered officers to abandon it.

USA: Ex-Minneapolis cop faces new sentence in death of 911 caller

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an unarmed woman after she called 911 to report a possible rape happening behind her home will be sentenced on a lesser charge Thursday after his murder conviction was overturned in a case that drew global attention and was fraught with the issue of race.

US hits 700,000 COVID deaths just as cases begin to fall

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The United States reached its latest heartbreaking pandemic milestone Friday, eclipsing 700,000 deaths from COVID-19 just as the surge from the delta variant is starting to slow down and give overwhelmed hospitals some relief.

It took 3 ½ months for the U.S. to go from 600,000 to 700,000 deaths, driven by the variant’s rampant spread through unvaccinated Americans. The death toll is larger than the population of Boston.
