600,000 deployed for Bangladesh vote marred by violence

29 Dec 2018; AFP: Bangladesh tightened security Saturday for an election expected to see Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina win a record fourth term but dominated by opposition claims that they have been shackled by a government clampdown.

Authorities have deployed around 600,000 police, army and other security forces ahead of Sunday's vote, a senior official said, following a deadly campaign of clashes and the arrests of opposition activists.

Bangladesh sentences 19 to death, 19 to life over 2004 deadly grenade blasts

DHAKA, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Bangladesh court sentenced 19 people to death on Wednesday, including two former ministers, over a case of grenade attacks at now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's rally in 2004 that killed at least 24 people.

Another 19 people including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, the current opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman, were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The sentence also included jail terms for 11 others.

Bangladesh court clears way for execution of Saudi diplomat murder convict

DHAKA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's apex court on Sunday dismissed the review petition filed by a death row convict in the murder case of Saudi diplomat Khalaf Al Ali.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain made the ruling, clearing the way for the execution of Saiful Islam Mamun Mamun who is now behind the bar.

The SC in November last year upheld the death sentence for Mamun and life terms for three others in the murder case of Saudi diplomat Khalaf Al Ali.

WB approves 515 mln USD for Bangladesh fisheries, forest, road projects

DHAKA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank has approved 515 million U.S. dollars for three projects in Bangladesh to improve coastal and marine fisheries, forest management, and rural roads.

These financings will help rural people by reducing poverty and creating new livelihood opportunities, including for local communities in the country's southeastern Cox's Bazar district hosting Rohingya people who fled violence in Myanmar, said the Washington-based lender in a statement received here Saturday.

ADB approves 110 mln USD for Bangladesh urban healthcare services

DHAKA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved additional loan financing of 110 million U.S. dollars for a project that is improving access to urban primary healthcare services in Bangladesh through public-private partnerships (PPPs).

Journalists give 72-hour ultimatum to B'desh govt to arrest those attacked their colleagues

Dhaka, Aug 7; PTI:  Journalists in Bangladesh today gave a 72-hour ultimatum to the government to arrest those involved in attacks on some of their colleagues while covering the unprecedented protests by the students over road safety, according to media reports.

At least seven photojournalists, including an Associated Press (AP) photographer, were injured in attacks with sharp weapons, sticks and iron rods by youths wearing helmets at Dhanmondi, Jigatala and Science Laboratory areas on Sunday, while covering the protests.

Bangladesh PM urges protesting students to return home

Dhaka, Aug 5 (PTI) Thousands of angry school students in Bangladesh continued their protest for the eighth consecutive day today, demanding a crackdown on reckless driving even as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged them to return home, saying that vested quarters have infiltrated the campaign.

The protest brought the capital city to a standstill, blocking major intersections compelling the bus operators to suspend their services citing security reasons and exposing commuters in Dhaka to extreme difficulties.

India signs revised travel agreement with Bangladesh

PTI; Dhaka, Jul 15 : India today signed a revised travel agreement with Bangladesh to ease visa restrictions for citizens from the neighbouring country. The agreement was signed between the two countries in Dhaka in presence of visiting Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan.

Singh is here on a three-day visit.

Under the Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA)-2018, freedom fighters and elderly Bangladeshi nationals will get five year multiple visa from India, Daily Star reported.

India inaugurates largest visa centre in Bangladesh

PTI; Dhaka, Jul 14 : India inaugurated its largest visa centre in the world in the Bangladeshi capital today to reduce the waiting time for applicants.

Bangladeshis constitute one of the largest number of visitors from a single country to India. Last year, India the country issued 1.4 million visas to Bangladeshi nationals, BD News reported.

Visiting Home Minister Rajanth Singh, who is here on a three-day visit inaugurated the centre along with his Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan.
