Pompeo condemns China's Xinjiang crackdown during Central Asia tour

Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), Feb 2 (AFP/PTI) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on countries to offer asylum to ethnic minorities fleeing China's troubled Xinjiang region during a visit Sunday to oil-rich Kazakhstan -- a country that borders the region.

"We ask simply for them to provide safe refuge and asylum for those seeking to flee China," Pompeo said at a press appearance with Kazakh foreign minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi.

Pompeo, in Kazakhstan, warns of China’s growing reach

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Kazakhstan pressing authorities to be wary of Russian and Chinese investment and influence.

Bringing a message similar to one he has delivered repeatedly to other countries, Pompeo was telling senior Kazakh officials on Sunday that the attractiveness of such investment comes with a cost to sovereignty and may hurt, instead of help, long-term development.

China, Kazakhstan Jointly Unveil Ancient City On Silk Road

XI’AN, Jan 27 (NNN-XINHUA) – A China-Kazakhstan joint archaeological research, unveiled the ruins of a city on the ancient Silk Road.

The Shaanxi Provincial Archaeological Research Institute in northwest China, said that, its cooperation with the Issyk State Historical-Cultural Museum, in Kazakhstan, on the excavation of the ancient city of Rahat, entered its third phase in 2019.

Kazakhstan’s president declares December 28 day of mourning after deadly plane crash

NUR-SULTAN, December 27. /TASS/: Kazakhstan’s president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has declared December 28 a national day of mourning in the wake of Friday’s Bek Air plane crash near Almaty, Presidential Spokesman Berik Uali wrote on his Facebook page.

"President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared December 28, 2019, a national day of mourning in connection with the deadly passenger plane crash near Almaty," he wrote.

Death toll in Kazakhstan plane crash rises to 14

ALMATY, Dec 27 (NNN-BERNAMA-SPUTNIK) –The number of people who died as a result of the Bek Air airline crash on Friday near the Kazakh city of Almaty has risen to 14, with 35 more people having been injured in the incident, Sputnik news agency reported the city’s administration as saying.

Earlier in the day, the Kazakh Interior Ministry said that nine people died and nine more were injured in the crash, which took place soon after the take-off.

“14 people died at the site (of the crash),” the city administration said in a statement.

Kazakhstan Set To Abolish Death Penalty

NUR-SULTAN, Dec 21 (NNN-RIA) – President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, said, he ordered procedures, to abolish the death penalty in the country.

Tokayev made the remarks, at the second meeting of the National Council of Public Trust, held in the capital, Nur-Sultan. The council, comprising prominent social activists, deputies of parliament, economists and political scientists, was established by the president, to better involve public opinions in policy-making. China, Kazakhstan to further promote synergy of BRI, Kazakh economic policy: ambassador

NUR-SULTAN, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- China and Kazakhstan will continue to promote high-quality alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Bright Path new economic policy, Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan Zhang Xiao said Friday.

Two-way trade is expected to reach a new record of more than 20 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, Zhang said at a reception for representatives of business circles from China and Kazakhstan, adding that a number of important industrial projects have been launched.

Russia, Iran, Turkey condemn illegal seizure of oil revenues in Syria — statement

NUR-SULTAN, December 11. /TASS/: The guarantors of the Astana process — Russia, Iran and Turkey — condemn the illegal seizure of oil revenues in Syria, the three countries said in a joint statement following the 14th round of international talks on Syria held in Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana.

According to the statement, the three guarantor countries "expressed their opposition to the illegal seizure and transfer of oil revenues that should belong to the Syrian Arab Republic."
