India: Channi, Sidhu meet amid tension in Punjab Congress

Chandigarh, Nov 8 (PTI) AICC Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Chaudhary on Monday held a meeting with Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu, amid unease between the two leaders over government appointments.

The meeting was held just a few hours after Sidhu called a press conference and questioned his party's government in the state over the status of investigation into the 2015 Kotkapura police firing incident.

India: Amarinder Singh resigns from Congress

Chandigarh, Nov 2 (PTI) Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh resigned from the Congress on Tuesday.

He sent a seven-page resignation letter to party president Sonia Gandhi, sources said.

Singh had quit as the Punjab chief minister in September amid a bitter power tussle with state Congress chief Navjot Sidhu.

A few days ago, Singh had dismissed reports of back channel talks with the Congress as incorrect , saying the time for rapprochement was over and his decision to leave the grand old party was final.

India: 15-yr-old girl raped by uncle in Punjab

Hoshiarpur (Pb), Oct 30 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her uncle in a village under Mahilpur Police Station here, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in February this year but the victim revealed her ordeal to her mother after she became pregnant.

The accused identified as Jasbir Singh allegedly raped the victim when she was alone at home and her mother was away for work, police said, adding that he has been arrested.

India: One more arrest in Singhu border lynching case

Amritsar (Pb), Oct 16 (PTI) A second arrest was made on Saturday in connection with the lynching of a Dalit man at a farmers' protest site at the Singhu border, police said.

Narain Singh, belonging to the Sikhs' Nihang order, was arrested by the Amritsar Rural police at Amarkot village in Amritsar district, they said.

On Friday, Sarabjit Sigh was the first person to be arrested in connection with the case.

A court in Sonipat on Saturday remanded him to police custody for seven days.

India: Chandigarh administration bans sale, use of firecrackers

Chandigarh, Oct 12 (PTI) The Chandigarh administration Tuesday imposed a complete ban on the sale or use of firecrackers of any kind to prevent the risk of spread of COVID-19 due to polluted atmosphere, according to an official order.

The order said these directions will come into force with immediate effect and will remain in effect until further notice.

The decision was taken after an extensive consultation with health, environment experts and other stakeholders, the order said.

India: Man held for molesting British woman diplomat

Chandigarh, Oct 8 (PTI) Police here on Friday arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly molesting a woman diplomat posted at the British Deputy High Commission here.

The 60-year-old diplomat was molested by the man when she was walking towards the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association grounds in Sector 10 from her house in Sector 9 here around 6.30 am on Wednesday.

The accused who was on a motorcycle had approached from behind and hit her on her back inappropriately, police said.

India: SAD delegation to visit Lakhimpur Kheri to meet families of farmers killed

Chandigarh, Oct 7 (PTI) A five-member Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) delegation will on Thursday leave for Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh to meet the families of farmers killed in violence during a protest four days ago, party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said.

He said the delegation would also meet representatives of the Uttar Pradesh government and urge them to arrest the perpetrators of the violence immediately.

India: Sidhu reiterates demand for removal of Punjab DGP, AG

Chandigarh, Oct 3 (PTI) Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday again strongly demanded replacement of Punjab's police chief and advocate general from his own party's government, saying otherwise we will have no face.

His tweet pressing the Charanjit Singh Channi-led government to change the director general of police and state's advocate general appears to indicate that he continues to remain unhappy over certain key appointments.

India: Post or no post will stand by Rahul, Priyanka: Sidhu

Chandigarh, Oct 2 (PTI) Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had abruptly resigned as the Punjab Congress chief, said on Saturday he would stand with Gandhi siblings Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi whether he holds any post or not.

Upset with some appointments after Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi took charge, Sidhu had put in his papers and, though efforts were made to placate him, it remains unclear if his resignation has been accepted.
