May wins mandate to reopen Brexit deal but EU says no changes

30 Jan 2019; AFP: British Prime Minister Theresa May won parliament's backing on Tuesday to renegotiate her Brexit deal -- a major policy reversal that sets up a new standoff with the European Union after it ruled out any change.

May's dramatic decision to abandon a pact she herself sealed with the 27 EU leaders at a summit last month came with Britain on course to crash out of the bloc in political and economic chaos on March 29.

London, Jan 28 (PTI) The UK government Monday expressed regret over reports that the Indian flag was burnt during a demonstration by separatist groups outside the Indian High Commission in London on Republic Day.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said it was disappointed that separatist groups had chosen to take such an action, as Scotland Yard confirmed that it was working to establish the exact circumstances around the incident on Saturday.

Sony to shift UK HQ to avoid Brexit disruption

23 Jan 2019; AFP: Sony will shift its European headquarters from Britain to the Netherlands to avoid Brexit-related customs issues, but operations at its current UK company will remain unchanged, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

"We are moving the location of our European headquarters' registration to the Netherlands" by the end of March, company spokesman Takashi Iida told AFP.

The relocation is aimed at avoiding cumbersome customs-related procedures after Britain leaves the European Union, he said.

Brexiter James Dyson to move HQ to Singapore

22 Jan 2019; DW: UK billionaire and Brexit campaigner James Dyson announced on Tuesday that he is moving the headquarters of his company, famous for its cordless vacuum cleaners, to Singapore. Dyson insisted that the move had nothing to do with the UK's exit from the European Union.

"An increasing majority of Dyson's customers and all of our manufacturing operations are now in Asia; this shift has been occurring for some time and will quicken as Dyson brings its electrical vehicle to market," the company said in a statement.

May made the remarks while addressing lawmakers in the House of Commons to outline her latest proposals for Britain's departure from EU.

It follows last week's overwhelming defeat in the British parliament for her Brexit deal.

The defeat of her deal, by more than 200 votes, was the biggest in the country's political history.

Four men arrested over terror car blast in Northern Ireland

21 Jan 2019; DW: Police in Northern Ireland arrested two men after a car bomb was detonated in the town of Londonderry. Two other men were arrested on Sunday. Investigators believe the attack was linked with New IRA militants.

Four men were arrested in Northern Ireland's Londonderry on Sunday in connection with Saturday's apparent car bombing in the town center.

Two of the men, 34 and 42, were arrested late on Sunday, hours after police detained two other men in their twenties.
