India: BJP facing 'spontaneous anger' of farmers: Punjab CM

Chandigarh, Feb 9 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said BJP leaders were facing spontaneous anger of farmers and rejected as hilarious claims of the saffron party's state unit that the protesters were not peasants but Congress workers.

Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma had earlier in the day accused the Punjab government of organising protests under the guise of farmers' agitation to "prevent" candidates of the saffron party from campaigning ahead of the February 14 civic polls.

India: Punjab BJP chief's vehicle attacked in Ferozepur

Ferozepur, Feb 9 (PTI) The vehicle of Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma was allegedly attacked by some unidentified persons with sticks and rods when he came here for a meeting with local party workers on Tuesday.

Sharma's vehicle was attacked when he was leaving the venue after the meeting, during which some protesters had tried to storm it, forcing the police to use mild cane-charge to disperse them.

Sharma escaped unhurt during the attack on his vehicle, officials said.

India: 'Chakka jam': Farmers in Punjab, Haryana block roads

Chandigarh, Feb 6 (PTI) Farmers protesting against the Centre's new agri laws and other issues blocked roads at several places in Punjab and Haryana on Saturday on the call given by the farmers' unions for a nationwide 'chakka jam'.

Farmers' unions had on Monday announced a countrywide 'chakka jam' from 12 noon to 3 pm on February 6 when they would block national and state highways in protest against the Internet ban in areas near their agitation sites, harassment allegedly meted out to them by authorities, and other issues.

India: Bajwa urges Punjab CM to to find 100 missing farmer protesters

Chandigarh, Jan 30 (PTI) Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa on Saturday urged Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to use all available sources to trace over 100 farmers who have been missing since January 26 tractor rally in Delhi.

Citing some media reports, Bajwa wrote to Amarinder Singh, saying over 100 farmers from the state have been missing since the incidents that occurred on January 26 in Delhi .

India: Shiromani Akali Dal condemns Delhi violence

Chandigarh, Jan 27 (PTI) The Shiromani Akali Dal on Wednesday condemned the Republic Day violence in Delhi, saying the country can prosper only through perseverance of atmosphere of peace and communal harmony.

Party leader Bikram Singh Majithia also sought an international inquiry into the manner in which a few self-styled leaders allegedly incited violence under the garb of farmers tractor parade held on Tuesday to highlight the demands of the farmer unions to repeal the three new agriculture laws.

India: Punjab CM appeals to PM to accept farmers' demands

Patiala, Jan 26 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to accept the farmers' demands, saying the new farm laws were "completely wrong".

Singh said the elderly farmers were sitting at the borders of Delhi not for themselves, but for their children and the future generations.

India: Those supporting farmer protests being vilified: Sukhbir

Chandigarh, Jan 22 (PTI) Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday condemned the registration of a case against party leader and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Sirsa was booked by the Delhi Police on Thursday for alleged misappropriation of funds during his tenure as the secretary general of the DSGMC.

India: Mann recuses himself from SC committee on farm laws

Chandigarh, Jan 14 (PTI) Bhartiya Kisan Union president Bhupinder Singh Mann, who was one of the four members of the Supreme Court-appointed committee on farm laws, on Thursday said he is recusing himself from the panel.

Mann said he is thankful to the apex court for nominating him on the committee but would sacrifice any position offered to him so as not to compromise the interests of farmers.

India: Farmers in Punjab burn copies of farm laws on Lohri

Chandigarh, Jan 13 (PTI) Farmers in Punjab on Wednesday burnt copies of the Centre's three new farm laws at several places on the festival of Lohri as a mark of protest against the legislations.

The harvest festival of Lohri is celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and other parts of north India. Bonfires are an important part of the festivities.

India: Farmers try to disrupt BJP event in Jalandhar

Chandigarh, Jan 10 (PTI) A group of farmers protesting against the Centre's farm laws on Sunday tried to disrupt a BJP programme in Punjab's Jalandhar district.

They shouted slogans against the Centre and the Punjab BJP leadership over the farm laws.

Heavy police security arrangements were made by the Punjab Police to maintain law and order, said officials.

Barricades were put up, a water cannon and an earthmoving machine were deployed to prevent protesters from disrupting the BJP's programme at Company Bagh in Jalandhar.
