India: Mumbai to host IOC session in 2023

Mumbai, Feb 19 (PTI) The International Olympic Committee on Saturday awarded India the right to host the IOC Session in Mumbai next year.

Nita Ambani, the Indian representative on the committee, described it as "a significant development for the country's Olympic aspiration".

India will host the session for the first time since 1983. The session will be hosted at the state-of-the-art, brand new Jio World Convention Centre.

India: Rupee falls 20 paise to 75.56 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai, Feb 14 (PTI) The rupee declined 20 paise to 75.56 against the US dollar in opening trade on Monday, amid geopolitical tensions pushing investors to the safe-haven appeal of the greenback.

Forex traders said muted domestic equities and elevated crude oil prices weighed on the local unit.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 75.53 against the US dollar, then slipped further to 75.56, registering a decline of 20 paise from the last close.

India: Outspoken industrialist Rahul Bajaj dies at 83

Pune, Feb 12 (PTI) Eminent industrialist and former chairman of the Bajaj group, Rahul Bajaj, who put Indian industry on the world map and was known for his outspokenness, died on Saturday due to age-related illness, according to a group official.

Bajaj (83), who stood down from his position of non-executive director and chairman of Bajaj Auto on April 30 last year and remained as the Chairman Emeritus, was not keeping well for some time and passed away at around 2:30 pm on Saturday. His last rites will be held on Sunday, the official said.

India: State funeral for Lata Mangeshkar: Maha CM

Mumbai, Feb 6 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, who died at a hospital here in the morning, will be accorded a state funeral.

Lata Mangeshkar (92), the voice of generations of Indians and one of the biggest music icons of the country, died due to multiple organ failure, her sister Usha Mangeshkar and doctors treating her said.

The last rites will be held in the evening.

Thackeray in a statement said Lata Mangeshkar's death was an end of a glorious era.

India's voice' Lata Mangeshkar is dead

Mumbai, Feb 6 (PTI) Lata Mangeshkar, whose voice struck an instant chord of recognition with generations of South Asians and is considered one of India's greats, died in a Mumbai hospital on Sunday due to multiple organ failure. She was 92.

The singer, whose name was written into legend long years before she took her last breath in Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital, had been in hospital since January 8 when she was diagnosed with Covid with mild symptoms. She was also diagnosed with pneumonia.

India: Debt-ridden businessman commits suicide in Mumbai

Mumbai, Feb 2 (PTI) A 30-year-old debt-ridden businessman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a multi-storey building in suburban Malad, a police official said on Wednesday.

According to the official, the deceased, identified by the police as Saurabh Pitale, jumped off the terrace of the four-storey building on Monday.

The businessman left behind a purported suicide note, in which he claimed he was under a debt of Rs 25 lakh and finding it difficult to repay his creditors, the official said.

India: Young couple commit suicide due to a financial crisis

Palghar, Jan 28 (PTI) A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Varkhanda village in Dahanu area of Palghar reportedly due to a financial crisis, police said on Friday.

The bodies of Sushmita Prakash Bhimra and Sudhip Dhaku Umbarsada were found hanging from a tree, a Talasari police station official said.

The two were engaged to get married but were facing financial trouble as the man's saloon had shut down, the official added.

Indian Rupee falls 41 paise to 75.19 against US dollar

Mumbai, Jan 27 (PTI) The rupee declined 41 paise to 75.19 against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday, tracking the strength of the American currency after hawkish US Fed policy stance.

Forex traders said muted domestic equities, sustained foreign fund outflows and firm crude oil prices also weighed on the local unit.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened weak at 75.18 against the US dollar, then fell further to 75.19, registering a decline of 41 paise from the last close.

On Tuesday, the rupee settled at 74.78 against the US dollar.

India: Sharad Pawar tests positive for coronavirus

Mumbai, Jan 24 (PTI) NCP president Sharad Pawar on Monday said he has tested positive for coronavirus, but there is no cause of worry.

"I have tested Covid positive but there is no cause for concern. I am following the treatment suggested by my doctor," the 81-year-old former Union minister tweeted.

"I request all those who have been in contact with me in the past few days to get themselves tested and take all necessary precautions," added Pawar, whose party shares power with the Shiv Sena and Congress in Maharashtra
