India: 4 lakh migrants ferried out of Gujarat in trains so far

Ahmedabad, May 14 (PTI) More than 300 Shramik Special trains from Gujarat have ferried around 4 lakh migrant workers to their home states amid the lockdown so far, accounting for 40 per cent of transportation of such people in the country, said officials on Thursday.

With this, out of the total 10 lakh migrants sent back to their respective native places through Shramik Special trains across the country so far, as many as four lakh were from Gujarat alone, they said.

India: Gujarat Cong urges Speaker to declare Dholka seat vacant

Ahmedabad, May 13 (PTI) A day after the Gujarat High Court declared state BJP minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama's election in 2017 as void, opposition Congress on Wednesday urged the Assembly Speaker to declare Dholka seat as vacant.

Chudasama had won from Dholka seat of Ahmedabad district by defeating Congress candidate Ashwin Rathod in 2017.

India: Five prisoners escape from Gujarat jail amid lockdown

Surendranagar, May 13 (PTI) Five prisoners, including four facing trial for murder, escaped from a jail in Gujarat's Surendranagar district in the early hours of Wednesday, an official said.

They broke locks of the barrack where they were lodged in Dhrangadhra sub-jail and then escaped by climbing the prison wall, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dhrangadhra, Rajendra Devdha said.

India: Mob hurls stones at police in Ahmedabad, 15 detained

Ahmedabad, May 8 (PTI) An agitated mob pelted stones at policemen who were enforcing lockdown in Shahpur area of Ahmedabad city on Friday evening, a senior official said.

Shahpur, a minority community-dominated area, is in `Red Zone' as several coronavirus cases have been found in the locality.

While a police inspector was injured in the stone-pelting, 15 persons were detained by police.

Police lobbed 30 teargas shells to disperse the mob, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Patel.

India: Migrants clash with cops in Surat, over 100 detained

Surat, May 9 (PTI) Hundreds of migrant workers came onto the streets and clashed with the police at a village in Surat district of Gujarat on Saturday to demand that they either be sent back to their home states or allowed to resume work at local industrial units to earn money, police said.

The police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas to disperse the mob. Over a 100 workers were detained in this connection, an official said.

The incident took place at Mora village near industrial town of Hazira.

India: Shops to remain closed in Ahmedabad for one week

Ahmedabad, May 6 (PTI) To control the spread of coronavirus in Ahmedabad city, civic authorities on Wednesday ordered the closure of all the shops except those selling milk and medicines for a week.

As per the order signed by municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar, the shops will remain closed from May 7 midnight till 6 am on May 15.

While milk outlets and medical stores can remain open, all other shops, including thoses selling fruits, vegetables and grocery items, will remain closed, the order said.

India: Migrant workers want to go home, clash with police in Gujarat

Surat, May 4 (PTI) Hundreds of migrant workers seeking to return home clashed with police and pelted stones at them near a village in Gujarat's Surat district on Monday, following which the security personnel lobbed teargas shells and baton-charged the agitated workers, an official said.

Besides, several labourers also came out on a road in Rajkot demanding that they be sent back to their hometowns, while some migrant workers got their heads tonsured in an area of Surat after being unable to go back home.

India: Locals hurl stones at cops for enforcing lockdown in Guj

Ahmedabad, Apr 22 (PTI) At least four policemen, including a senior inspector, were injured after locals threw stones at them for enforcing the COVID-19 lockdown at a locality in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city on Wednesday, an official said.

As many as 15 residents of Sardarnagar area were detained and the process of lodging an FIR was initiated, inspector M B Barad of Sardarnagar police station said.

India: Wear mask in Ahmedabad or face Rs 5000 fine/3-year jail

Ahmedabad, Apr 12 (PTI) In view of the rising number of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad, the city civic body has made it compulsory for people to wear masks from Monday, failing which they would be fined Rs 5,000 or sentenced to three years in jail, an official said.

The order has been issued under the Epidemic Diseases Act in a bid to contain the spread of the deadly disease, Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra said on Sunday.
